Q.1 What is the role and responsibility of NRI & Women Wing ?

Ans.  1. NRI & Women Wing is the nodal authority at the State level for looking into the complaints of NRIs.NRI related criminal cases are also supervised.
2. NRI Wing in the Punjab Police was established in 2004 headed by an AIG rank officer with a view to provide a forum at state Police headquarters for NRIs to interact and lodge their grievances. In 2011, the NRI Wing was upgraded under the supervision of IGP rank officer. Ms. Gurpreet Deo, IPS, IGP/NRI & Women Wing have been heading this Wing since 2011. Sh. L.K. Yadav, IPS, DIG/NRI & Women Wing and two AIG rank officers assist IGP/NRI & Women Wing alongwith field officers of rank of Inspector and DySP.
3. Eleven NRI Police Stations working under the supervision of this Wing have now got jurisdiction of entire state. Three NRI Police Stations have been established recently in Gurdaspur, Mohali and Jalandhar Rural districts.

Q.2 What kind of cases are dealt by NRI Wing ?

Ans.  The Wing deals with the complaints where NRI is complainant and also cases in which NRIs are accused. Mostly complaints are of property and matrimonial disputes. The Wing specially deals with Holiday Marriages and Fraudulent marriages.

Q.3 How much time is taken to deal with these complaints ? What is the year wise data of NRI complaints received and disposal rate ?

Ans.  Enquiries of the complaints are conducted in a time bound manner. Generally, 15 days time period is fixed for disposal of the complaints. The year wise data of the NRI complaints and disposal is as under:-

Q.4 How monitoring of these complaints is done ?

Ans.  Complaints by NRI’s can be lodged online on the web portal of Punjab Police nripunjabpolice.com. NRI’s can also lodge complaints directly on email nri.pbpolice@gmail.com. IGP/NRI & Women Wing monitors these complaints through DIG/AIG and SP/DSP rank officers who conduct a detailed factual inquiry and process the case. The NRIs are advised to keep in touch with Nodal Officers of the NRI Wing whose Name and Contact details are provided to the NRI by E-mail within 24 hours of receipt.

Q.5 What steps have been taken for better working of NRI & Women Wing ?

Ans.  A Punjab Police Helpline for NRIs have been established at Phase-7, S.A.S. Nagar on 24x7 basis on which NRIs from abroad may lodge their complaints directly on telephone No 0091-172-2298543 and they are also being informed about the action taken also. They may also speak to officers of NRI Wing at Tel. Nos. 0091-172-2260042/2260043.

Message to NRIs

The Punjab Government has taken several proactive steps to ensure that NRIs do not face harassment and get suitable assistance for following up their cases.
