Introduction to NRI Wing

               NRI wing was established at Punjab Police Headquarters, Chandigarh on 10.2.2004 to handle various problems faced by NRIs such as cheating and robbery by Taxi drivers, harassment / extortion of N.R.Is problems relating to property and civil dispute with the relatives and friends and marital problems etc. faced by the NRIs. The Wing was initially headed by a AIG rank officer. The Government has now posted an IGP rank officer as incharge for supervision of NRI matters through out the State at the Police Headquarters. In cases, where NRIs are not able to get satisfactory responses from NRI Police stations or police officials posted in districts, they can contact IGP/NRI and Women Welfare who looks into the complaint of NRIs and takes follow up action at appropriate levels for ensuring justice to NRIs.

              To redress the grievances of NRIs more effectively 6 NRI Police Stations at Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Ludhiana, Moga, Nawanshehar and Kapurthala were created on 3.4.2008. Another NRI Police station in Police distt. Ludhiana Rural(Jagraon) was established in year 2012 and the 8th NRI police station was notified for the holy city of Amritsar in 2013.

NRI's can send their complaints through the following sources :-

  1. Complaints submitted by a NRI, in person.
  2. Complaints sent by the public representatives/through their offices.
  3. Complaints received through various Ambassadors/High Commissioners.
  4. Complaints received on phone or through Fax.
  5. Complaints received by way of e-mail or any other complaint received from any other source.

               89 cases were registered on the complaints of NRIs in the NRI Police Stations during the year 2012. Out of these cases 49 cases are under trial in Court whereas 32 cases are under Investigation.
